RIU Weekly Activity Report (29 Jan - 5 Feb)

General

Our Rapid Intervention Unit (RIU) has been actively patrolling and responding to incidents to ensure the safety of our communities. Here’s a summary of key activities from the week of 29 January to 5 February:


Nightshift Highlights (18:00 - 06:00)

Theft & Arrests:


- Suspects apprehended at busy shopping complex in Central.
- Arrest made following theft at prominent Gqeberha primary school.



Crime Prevention & Response:


- Located a lost family member in North End.
- Responded to reports of suspects on the roof at 5th Ave, Newton Park.
- Assisted with a suspect search in Greenshields Park.
- Backed up Atlas Security Armed Response unit in Walmer Blvd after spotting a known suspect inside a complex.
- Assisted Atlas Security Armed Response after a suspect attempted to disarm and pepper spray an officer.
- Stolen vehicle recovered in Walmer Location (White Code 10 truck).
- Backed up Atlas Security Armed Response unit in South End chasing a known copper thief.
- Possible murder investigation at Hillcrest, Bluewater Bay.
- Assisted Atlas Security Armed Response unit in Central following a positive break-in.


Dayshift Highlights (06:00 - 18:00)

Road Attendance & Emergency Response:

- Investigated a roof break-in at Hammond Road.
- Attended to a domestic dispute at 2nd Ave, Newton Park.
- Assisted with an accident in Walter Rd, Charlo.
- Assisted SAPS & Atlas Security Armed Response in a kidnapping and assault case.



Patrols & Investigations:


- Assisted SAPS in apprehending suspects under a bridge at popular wholesale & supply store.
- Responded to an ATM scam attempt at Spar Algoa Park.
- Recovered hijacked truck last seen in Grahamstown Road, later found by SAPS in Kwazakhele.
- Assisted client in Lloyd Rd whose bike broke down.
- Located a possible suspect involved in a King Georges Rd theft incident.



Additional Interventions & Community Support

- Responded to reports of trespassing in Brickmakerskloof, Central.
- Assisted in multiple alarm activations in Sidwell and Newton Park.
- Assisted a mugging victim in Strand Street, Central – transported to hospital by Metro.
- Investigated reports of wire theft in Sidwell – suspects escaped but stolen equipment was recovered.
- Prevented a robbery attempt in Zareba St, Central – case opened.

Increased Business Break-Ins: Why Active Keyholders Are More Important Than Ever

Atlas Security has recently seen a sharp increase in business break-ins, particularly within industrial areas. Factories, warehouses and commercial premises that are closed after hours are increasingly being targeted by opportunistic criminals who know these sites are often quiet and unattended. During several recent incidents, our Control Room has experienced difficulty contacting registered keyholders when alerts are activated. In some instances, phones go unanswered or no keyholder is available to attend site when access is required. This significantly slows the response process and in high-risk incidents, delays increase exposure and risk.
