Copper Theft Suspect Apprehended in Despatch

Crime

Atlas Security’s quick action led to the arrest of a suspect involved in copper theft on 25 March Tuesday afternoon in Retief, Despatch. The incident unfolded at Gustav Preller Street, where a non-client reported on a private social media group that a suspect was stealing copper pipes from the backyard of a property.

Atlas Security Armed Response Officer Bravo 11 was immediately dispatched, arriving on the scene within minutes. The complainant confirmed that a male suspect—wearing a light green shirt, white pants, and black shoes—had stolen approximately three meters of copper piping before fleeing the scene.

While assisting in stopping the water leak, Bravo 11 gathered a detailed suspect description and initiated a search. The suspect was spotted on Eric Louw Street, where a foot chase ensued, leading to his successful detainment. The stolen copper pipes were recovered in his possession.

SAPS member provided further assistance in transporting the suspect to the police station. A formal theft case was registered, and SAPS Detectives later confirmed that the suspect was linked to multiple theft and burglary cases.

This incident highlights the power of community vigilance and the effectiveness of a rapid security response. Copper theft remains a serious issue affecting infrastructure and homeowners alike, but cooperation between security teams, law enforcement, and the community ensures that criminals are held accountable.

Atlas Security remains committed to protecting and serving—one arrest at a time.
