Two Years of Protecting the Struandale Substation: A Collaborative Success Story
Safety

The power of partnership and proactive intervention has been instrumental in securing critical infrastructure in Nelson Mandela Bay. As we mark the second anniversary of protecting the Struandale Substation, we reflect on the success of a collaborative effort between Atlas Security, the Struandale Geographic Cluster, and the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber. This initiative has ensured that, for two years, the substation has remained untouched by vandalism and theft—safeguarding uninterrupted power supply to businesses in the area.
A Unified Effort for a Common Goal
In 2023, the Struandale Geographic Cluster formally adopted the Struandale Substation under the Business Chamber’s Adopt-A-Substation initiative. This forward-thinking programme was designed to tackle ongoing infrastructure challenges by involving businesses directly in the protection of essential utilities. Since the adoption, strategic security measures—including perimeter fencing, 24-hour armed patrols by Atlas Security, and state-of-the-art surveillance—have been implemented to deter criminal activity.
Ryan Morris, Community Development Manager at Atlas Security, emphasizes the significance of this initiative: “Infrastructure security is not just about physical deterrents; it’s about fostering a culture of accountability and collaboration. By working together, we have created a model that other business communities can replicate to protect vital assets.”
Sustainable Security Through Business Contributions
The continued success of the initiative is made possible through monthly contributions from businesses within the Struandale Geographic Cluster. These contributions fund ongoing security operations, including CCTV monitoring and rapid response services. This financial commitment ensures that the substation will remain protected for years to come.
Angus Clark, Chairperson of the Struandale Geographic Cluster, reflects on the initiative’s impact: “When businesses come together, real change happens. The security of our power infrastructure is vital for economic stability. By taking ownership of the issue, we have created a safer and more reliable environment for all.”
The Bigger Picture: A Model for Success
The Struandale Substation’s protection is part of a larger framework spearheaded by the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber. Launched in 2022 through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, the Adopt-A-Substation programme now includes 20 substations across the metro. This initiative empowers businesses to safeguard key infrastructure, reducing disruptions and creating a more stable operating environment.
Denise van Huyssteen, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, highlights the significance of private sector involvement: “The success of this initiative underscores the power of businesses stepping up to address challenges. By adopting a proactive and solution-driven approach, we not only protect critical infrastructure but also demonstrate the strength of collective action.”
Looking Ahead
With two years of success behind us, the future of the Struandale Substation remains secure thanks to the unwavering commitment of Atlas Security, the Struandale Geographic Cluster, and the Business Chamber. This initiative is a testament to the power of collaboration and serves as a benchmark for similar projects across the region.
