Two suspects detained. Copper theft stopped in progress. That was the outcome when Atlas Security armed response officers responded to an incident in Despatch late Monday night.
Late on the evening of 16 March 2026, Atlas Security’s control room received an alert from a monitored site in Despatch. Atlas Security AtlasVision cameras immediately detected suspicious activity, showing a suspect moving near the generator area.
Moments later, our control room operators observed a suspect on the roof actively removing copper piping from the premises. Armed response units were dispatched immediately.
Armed response units D02 and D01 arrived first on scene. Shortly after, armed response officer Bravo 29,responded shortly afterwards to assist.
Through coordinated action by our responding armed response officers, two suspects were detained on site. One suspect was located on the roof removing copper piping, while a second suspect was found at the rear of the premises.
Initial inspection confirmed that the suspects had already removed two five-metre sections of copper piping from the roof, causing damage and leaving water running from the broken pipes.
SAPS was contacted and responded to the scene. Upon arrival, SAPS members took custody of the suspects and transported them to the police station for further investigation.
Incidents like these highlight the critical role of proactive monitoring and rapid response. In this case, AtlasVision played a key role, allowing control room operators to visually confirm suspicious activity and guide our armed response teams in real time.
Unlike traditional outdoor detectors that only trigger an alert, AtlasVision provides live visual intelligence, enabling operators to see exactly what is happening on site and communicate accurate information to our armed response officers.
As a result, potential loss and damage were prevented and two suspects were successfully detained. The combination of advanced monitoring technology and rapid armed response continues to strengthen Atlas Security’s ability to protect the communities we serve.
