Crime Trends in May: Fewer Incidents, Focused Response, and Smart Surveillance at Work

Crime

As we look back on May 2025, it’s encouraging to note a 9% drop in incidents compared to April. Atlas Security recorded 428 non-CCTV incidents across Nelson Mandela Bay during the month, with Theft, Burglary, and Medical Emergencies making up the bulk of activity.

The most affected areas included Walmer (48 incidents), followed by Summerstrand and Newton Park (30 each). On the other end of the spectrum, areas like Rowallan Park, Westering, and Lovemore Heights reported minimal activity — just 1 or 2 incidents each.

The 25th of May stood out as the busiest day, with 24 incidents reported. The most common type of crime? Theft, with 151 reported cases, followed by Burglary (Confirmed Entry) and Medical Emergencies.

Behind the scenes, our teams remained active and agile:

  • 16 arrests were made by Atlas Security officers across multiple operations.
  • Our armed response teams collectively travelled over 303,470 kilometres in May to respond swiftly and efficiently.
  • Our Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) system performed 5,743,788 reads, generating 4,383 alerts, helping us identify suspicious vehicles and prevent possible crimes before they happen.

We continue to invest in technology and people. From LPR and CCTV monitoring to physical armed response presence, every layer works together to protect our clients. Our success lies not just in the numbers, but in how we act on them.

If you’re unsure about the state of your current security setup, now is a good time to request a system check or discuss an upgrade. Safety isn’t just a service; it’s a daily commitment.
