February Opens With High Theft Activity But Strong Intervention Across Metro

Crime

The first week of February 2026 saw Atlas Security teams respond to 91 incidents across Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas. While overall activity remained consistent with post-holiday trend patterns, theft-related crimes once again dominated operational deployments.

Theft Continues To Lead Crime Categories

The most reported incidents for the period were:

  • Theft: 31
  • Attempted Theft: 17
  • Burglary (Positive): 9
  • Attempted Burglary: 8

This means that over 70% of all operational incidents attended were property-related, reinforcing the continued targeting of both residential and commercial premises as economic pressures remain evident.

Medical emergencies also featured prominently, with 13 cases logged, highlighting the dual role Atlas Security plays in both crime prevention and community emergency support.

Other Notable Incident Types

Additional deployments included:

  • Motor Vehicle Accidents / Vehicle Incidents — 7
  • Robbery of Person — 2
  • Armed Robbery — 1
  • Trespassing — 1
  • Assault — 1
  • Fire — 1

Arrests And Suspect Apprehensions

Operational coordination between Armed Response units, the Rapid Intervention Unit, and community role players led to 8 arrests during the reporting period. These apprehensions stemmed primarily from theft and burglary-related incidents where suspects were successfully detained on scene or shortly thereafter.

Most Affected Areas

Deployment density was highest in the following suburbs:

  1. Kariega, Central — 7
  2. Lorraine — 6
  3. Walmer — 6
  4. Summerstrand — 4
  5. Cannon Hill — 4

These areas recorded elevated patrol activity and incident response requirements for the week.

Least Affected Areas

Encouragingly, several suburbs reflected minimal incident volumes:

  • Fernglen
  • Valleisig
  • Strelitzia Park
  • Walmer Heights
  • Upper Walmer (Atlas Security Dedicated Patrol Service)

Busiest Operational Day

Monday, 2 February registered as the busiest day of the week, with 21 incidents attended in a single 24-hour cycle. This spike placed significant demand on response resources.

Operational Perspective

The data reflects a continued dominance of opportunistic and property-driven crime, requiring proactive patrol visibility, rapid response coordination, and community information sharing.

Atlas Security remains fully deployed across all sectors, maintaining layered response capability through Armed Response, Rapid Intervention, Control Room intelligence, and community partnerships to suppress criminal activity and protect residents and businesses alike.
