In the seven days between 16 and 22 March 2026, Atlas Security responded to 102 incidents across Nelson Mandela Bay. That works out to roughly 14 to 16 callouts every single day, a pace that reflects both the reach of Atlas operations in the metro and the reality ofcrime in a city of this size.
Theft was, as it almost always is, the dominant theme. Between outright theft and theft attempts, those two categories alone accounted for 54 of the 102 incidents, more than half of everything responded to this week. Burglaries, confirmed and attempted, added another 20 incidents to the total. The picture that emerges is one of persistent opportunistic crime, criminals looking for unlocked vehicles, unattended property, and homes or businesses that present an easy target.
The split between residential and commercial incidents was closer than many might expect. Of the 102 incidents, 56 involved residential properties, making up 54.9% of responses. Commercia properties accounted for the remaining 46 incidents, or 45.1%.
Where Crime Hit Hardest
Summerstrand was the single busiest area this week, recording 9 incidents across a mix of residential and commercial properties. Mosel and Walmer each followed with 5 incidents, and Sidwell recorded 4. A further six suburbs, Overbaakens, Kunene Park, GreenshieldsPark, Heuwelkruin, Gqeberha Central and Mount Croix, each recorded 3 incidents. In total, incidents were spread across 52 suburbs, a reminder of just how widethe operational footprint of Atlas Security is across the metro.
While theft dominates the statistics, it was the higher-severity incidents that painted the more sobering picture this week. There were 9 incidents classified as robbery of person, armed robbery or house robbery, spread across Sydenham, Neave Industrial, Summerstrand, North End, Rosedale, Bluewater Bay, Deal Party and Mount Croix. Three of those were armed robberies, all involving commercial properties.
With Easter Weekend Approaching, Here Is What to Keep in Mind
Long weekends change the rhythm of crime. Properties are left unattended for extended periods, families travel, businesses close early or operate on skeleton staff, and opportunistic criminals take note of all of it. Here are some practical steps to take before you head off or wind down for the long weekend.
• Arm your alarm every time you leave, even for short trips.
• If you are travelling over Easter, let your neighbours know. An occupied-looking street is far less attractive to a would-be burglar than a quiet one.
• Keep valuables out of sight in your vehicle. Smash-and-grab incidents tend to increase over holiday periods when people are travelling with more belongings than usual.
• Business owners should ensure security measures are in place before closing up for the weekend. Check that all access points are secured, cameras are operational and any alarms systems are fully functional.
• If you see something that does not feel right, trust that instinct and call it in.
Atlas Security wishes all residents and businesses in Nelson Mandela Bay a safe and peaceful Easter weekend. Our teams will be on the road, as they always are.
