Crime Creeps Up, but Newton Park Shines: A Week of Shifts in the Bay’s Crime Trends”
General

Atlas Security’s latest crime statistics for the week of 13 to 19 October 2025 reveal an overall increase in incidents across Nelson Mandela Bay, with a 26% rise compared to the previous week. A total of 135 incidents were recorded, and 12 arrests were made during the period.
While the spike in crime is concerning, particularly with theft once again topping the list as the most common crime, there are a few encouraging signs. Newton Park, which has consistently been a hotspot in recent weeks, recorded only one incident this week, indicating a noticeable drop in criminal activity and marking a positive shift for the area.
The highest number of incidents occurred on Saturday, 18 October, with 31 incidents logged in a single day. Walmer and Sidwell were the most affected suburbs, recording six and five incidents respectively. The majority of these cases involved theft, attempted theft, and burglaries, a pattern that continues to drive the overall rise in numbers.
Other frequently reported incidents included medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, and assaults, while isolated cases of armed robbery, kidnapping, and murder attempts were also noted.
Despite the week’s overall increase, Atlas Security’s response teams remain proactive, with visible patrols and targeted interventions continuing across key areas. The improvement seen in Newton Park is a reminder that community vigilance, supported by rapid response and strong collaboration between residents and Atlas Security, can make a real difference.
Atlas Security will continue to monitor trends closely and adapt deployment strategies to ensure maximum visibility and deterrence in affected areas.
