Theft Leads the Pack in Another Packed Week for Atlas Security

Crime

It's been a busy week for our response teams. Between 20 and 26 July, Atlas Security attended to 92 incidents across Nelson Mandela Bay, and this time commercial properties took the brunt of it, with 49 call-outs against 43 at residential addresses.

Theft is still the number one culprit, with 25 cases logged over the week. Our teams also chased down 15 attempted theft incidents and responded to 14 positive burglaries, while another 10 attempted break-ins were stopped before anything was taken. Add to that 9 vehicle-related incidents and 8 medical emergencies, and it made for a packed seven days on the road.

Monday set the tone early, with 16 incidents keeping our teams on their toes from the get-go. Things eased up by Tuesday, the quietest day of the week, before picking up again toward the weekend.

North End was the area to watch this week, recording 7 incidents. Kariega Central and Summerstrand followed close behind with 5 incidents each, while Sidwell, Vanes Estate, Sydenham and Overbaakens each saw 4. 28 suburbs across the Bay got off lightly with just one incident each, proof that a quiet week is possible almost anywhere, but never guaranteed.

So what can you do with all this? A few simple habits go a long way. Get into the routine of arming your alarm, even if you're just popping out for milk. If something looks off, whether it's a stranger loitering or a gate left open, give our control room a shout straight away. And as the nights draw in, it's worth double-checking that doors, windows and gates are properly secured before you turn in.
