Ironman Weekend. The Only Finish Line These Two Crossed Was At Humewood Police Station

Crime

While thousands of athletes pushed their limits across Nelson Mandela Bay this weekend, two suspects thought they'd take a shortcut of their own, helping themselves to someone else's belongings at a popular Summerstrand shopping mall.

They didn't make it far.

A white Toyota Starlet was flagged after being linked to a theft out of a motor vehicle at a Mall in Summerstrand. Our Rapid Intervention Unit got to work.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐭 𝐮𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐝:

Backed by our advanced CCTV infrastructure across the Metro, our highly trained Control Room team provided real-time tracking and coordination with the Rapid Intervention Units on the ground, turning eyes in the sky into boots on the road.

R2 spotted the vehicle first, heading up Parliament Street in Central. R1 was coming down the same road and pulled a swift U-turn to close in. As the vehicle turned down Russell Road, back-up was called in from Metro Police and additional Atlas Security members.

The vehicle was cornered in Kemsley Street. The driver was instructed to follow our RIU team to Humewood Police Station, with R2 leading in front and R1 locked in behind. Atlas Security Armed Response Officer Bravo 6 joined for extra security, while Atlas Security Armed Response Officer Bravo 11 went ahead to brief the detective and arrange a Metro Police escort from Walmer Boulevard straight to the station.

At the station:

Video footage from the scene told the full story. The passenger had been the one removing items from the victim's vehicle, while the driver stayed behind the wheel. The passenger had tried to switch shirts to throw off identification, but he'd kept on the Ironman jacket he'd stolen. Not the smartest cover-up.

Both suspects were positively identified and detained. Recovered stolen goods were valued at approximately R40 000, and the vehicle had been impounded by SAPS.

A massive well done to our RIU team and Control Room operators. Quick thinking, tight coordination, advanced technology, and a community that speaks up when something's not right, that's what keeps Nelson Mandela Bay safer.

To the athletes who raced this weekend, respect. To the two who tried their own event, better luck next time.
