House Robberies Surge Over the Weekend: Two Elderly Residents Attacked
Crime

This past weekend saw a disturbing increase in house robberies, with two separate incidents occurring in Summerstrand and Overbaakens, targeting elderly residents in their homes. A house robbery is classified as an incident where intruders enter a property while someone is still inside, and these recent attacks serve as a stark reminder of the importance of home security.
Incident 1: Summerstrand
On Bradley Road in Summerstrand, a 75-year-old resident living alone with his dog was brutally attacked inside his home. The victim reported being surprised in his passageway by three male suspects, believed to be foreign nationals. The suspects assaulted and choked him while demanding cash and valuables. They forced him to hand over the keys to his safes, which contained an undisclosed amount of money.
The suspects tortured the victim for three hours before tying him up in the bedroom and fleeing the scene. The homeowner managed to free himself using a knife from the kitchen and alerted Atlas Security. Response teams arrived within four minutes to assist him and gather critical information.
It appears that the suspects gained entry through a back door that was closed but not locked. Notably, the homeowner’s alarm system was not armed at the time of the attack. SAPS and Gardmed responded to provide further assistance and medical care for the victim.
Incident 2: Overbaakens
In Van der Heever Street, Overbaakens, an 83-year-old woman was targeted in the early hours of the morning. The suspects entered the property by removing an aluminium window from a spare bedroom that lacked burglar bars.
The victim was in the lounge using her tablet before heading to bed. As she walked through the passage, three male suspects grabbed her and forced her into her bedroom. They instructed her to cooperate while they ransacked her belongings. When she attempted to press her fixed panic button, the suspects pushed her into the bathroom and warned her to remain silent or risk being harmed.
The ordeal lasted approximately 20 minutes before the suspects fled through an area of the property currently under construction. They exited over a back boundary wall that lacked spikes or electric fencing.
Among the stolen items were:
- 1 TV
- 2 Tablets
- 1 Lenovo Phone
- Various pieces of jewellery
The victim did not sustain any physical injuries but was left severely shaken. SAPS attended the scene, and a case has been opened for further investigation.
Important Security Reminder
These incidents highlight the critical need for homeowners to take proactive security measures. Atlas Security strongly advises clients to ensure their alarm systems are armed, even when at home, and to secure all entry points, including windows and doors. Additionally, properties under construction or lacking adequate perimeter security can present vulnerabilities that criminals may exploit.
Atlas Security remains committed to assisting the community and urges residents to report any suspicious activity immediately. Stay vigilant, stay safe.
