August incident report: overall activity eases, but theft remains the main pressure point

Atlas Security recorded 382 incidents across its operational footprint during August 2026. That is 14 fewer than July's 396 incidents, representing a month-on-month decrease of approximately 4%. While the overall movement is encouraging, the figures show that property-related incidents continue to place the greatest pressure on communities.

Theft remained the most common incident type, rising from 112 cases in July to 120 in August. Attempted theft, however, fell sharply from 71 to 44. Burglary increased slightly to 52 incidents, while attempted burglary was virtually unchanged at 43. Taken together, theft and attempted theft accounted for 164 incidents - around 43% of everything recorded during the month.

Medical call-outs were the second-largest category, increasing from 43 in July to 57 in August. Atlas teams also attended 27 vehicle-related incidents, 10 robberies of a person, seven house robberies, six fires and five armed robberies. Nineteen arrests were recorded during August.

Walmer recorded the highest activity with 33 incidents, followed by Summerstrand with 20,Gqeberha Central with 18 and Vanes Estate with 16. Kariega Central, Bothasrus and North End were tied on 14 incidents each. At the other end of the scale, 36 areas recorded only one incident during the month.

The figures are a useful reminder that lower overall activity does not mean the risk has disappeared. Residents and businesses are encouraged to keep alarm systems armed, secure gates and doors, and report suspicious activity as early as possible. Small, consistent precautions remain one of the most effective ways to reduce opportunities for crime.
