Weekly Community Safety Report: 15 – 21 June 2026

Crime

Atlas Security responded to 111 incidents across Nelson Mandela Bay over the past week. Theft remained the dominant driver, with copper and cable the most frequently targeted, but fast response and alert clients stopped a number of incidents before any loss.

Over the week of 15 to 21 June, the Atlas Security control room and armed response teams responded to 111 incidents across Nelson Mandela Bay. The pattern held steady with the colder months: opportunistic theft remained the leading driver, with copper piping, cabling and outdoor fittings the items most often targeted.

Theft and attempted theft together accounted for 58 of the 111 incidents, more than half the week. Burglaries, both positive and attempted, made up a further 21, though a number of these were interrupted before any loss occurred thanks to fast response and clients monitoring their own cameras.

Where incidents clustered

Walmer recorded the highest concentration of activity with 11 incidents, followed by Newton Park (7) and Summerstrand (6). The spread stayed wide, with more than 40 suburbs represented across the seven days.

Copper and cable theft in focus

Roughly one in five incidents involved copper piping, electrical cabling or outdoor fittings being cut and removed. Targets ranged from residential geysers and garden taps to commercial power boxes, a school ceiling and municipal street-light cabling, with several leaving properties without power or water until repairs could be arranged. Securing meter boxes, fitting protective housing over external pipework, and ensuring outdoor cameras cover side passages all reduce the opportunity.

Response in action

In Newton Park, three officers spotted and apprehended a suspect in a client's front yard before anything was taken. In Summerstrand, two suspects who had taken store items were tracked and detained. At a Walmer commercial site, an on-site guard apprehended an intruder and handed him to SAPS

Beyond crime

Our teams also responded to 16 medical call-outs and 6 vehicle accidents, several involving elderly residents needing urgent hospital transport. Armed response in Nelson Mandela Bay is about more than crime: when our clients need help, our officers are often first on scene.

Staying secure this winter

  • Lock up fully, even when you are home. Several burglaries this week exploited gates and doors that were closed but not locked.
  • Arm your alarm. A number of break-ins occurred where the system was disarmed and no signal reached the control room.
  • Protect your copper. Box in external pipework and meter boxes, and keep side passages well lit and on camera.
  • Report it. Opening a SAPS case helps build the picture that drives policing and patrol decisions across the metro.
